His final solo at the end of the second act is one of the best performances of the role that I have ever seen (and I’ve lost count how many times I have seen the show). ![]() ![]() Instead, he focuses on emphasizing the disfigured creature’s tortured soul and unrequited love for operatic ingenue Christine (Katie Travis).ĭavis has a fine, smoky tenor voice. As the Phantom, Broadway vet Derrick Davis comes across less menacing then other Phantoms I have seen. The current touring production is exceptionally cast. ![]() Smart direction and set design aren’t the only tricks this “Phantom” has up its sleeve, however. Stairs down to the Phantom’s lair beneath the opera house magically appear on the sides while sections of it open up like a pop-up storybook to reveal various rooms in the opera house as well as the Phantom’s lair and the rooftop. ![]() Cases in point: One particular scene featuring ballet dancers in a dressing room is a Degas painting come to life. While this production may have lost the Broadway production’s grand staircase that’s featured in “Masquerade,” it’s replaced with the equally effective (and perhaps more era-appropriate) hall of mirrors and a climactic zoetrope of lights (courtesy of a video and projection design by Nina Dunn). A castle-like turret structure is the show’s largest set piece. ![]()
